Hello everyone! It has been great getting to know other ASB student members and helping to build our community the past several months. Here I provide a review of some of our previous events and what we have planned for the upcoming ASB 2023 Annual Meeting in Knoxville!
Overview of recent events:
- Monthly AMA and Professional Development Series
The student committee continues to host our monthly series of online events by and for students.
The AMA (Ask-Me-Anything) series features students who have recently published a paper talking to other students about their research and sharing their experience with the publishing process. Check out recordings of our previous AMA events. If you have recently published and are interested in sharing your experience, please complete this survey.
Our new Professional Development Series has been a great success. We just finished our fourth event of the year: a student-led panel covering conference preparation and networking. Thank you to our panelists Danny Davis, Jenny Leestma, and Lauren Luginsland, and our moderator Asal Aflatounian, for facilitating a great event for 35+ attendees! If you missed it, you can find the recording here.
- Student Chapters
We are pleased to welcome George Mason University as our newest student chapter! This means we now have a total of 14 student chapters. ASB student chapter leaders recently attended our biannual ‘Student Chapter Night,’ where students shared advice on member recruitment, fundraising, and event planning. A similar event will be hosted in-person in Knoxville. If you are interested in starting an ASB student chapter at your institution, more information can be found on our ASB website or by reaching out to me.
Preview of student-focused events at the upcoming ASB 2023 Annual Meeting in Knoxville:
- Student Reception and Student Night Out (Tuesday August 8th, 8-10pm)
This year’s student social will be held at Maple Hall, which is a self-proclaimed “spirited bowling experience.” So brush off your bowling shoes (just kidding…shoes provided) and get ready for a night of fun to ‘get the ball rolling’ for a great conference.
- Mentor Match (Wednesday August 9th, 1-2:30pm)
We are bringing back our popular mentor/mentee match program, where each student gets matched to a faculty/industry for a planned meet-up during the conference. Additional information and survey information to sign up as a student mentee will be sent out soon, so stay tuned.
- Professional Development Roundtables (Thursday August 10th, 6-7:30pm)
The student committee has been hard at work preparing an excellent event for career and professional development. We will have a series of groups addressing topics in both academia and industry. New this year: we have topics dedicated to undergraduate/masters students and postdoctoral fellows.
I am looking forward to meeting some of you in person in August and continuing to build connections with others virtually. As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or ideas.
