Awards and grants not only acknowledge individual achievements but also invigorate our scientific community by highlighting the crucial role of biomechanics research to the scientific community. As the deadlines for the American Society of Biomechanics awards and grant applications approach, I encourage you to recognize and celebrate the talent within our community by submitting nominations for yourself or others. With a budget of approximately $40,000 for fiscal year 2025, our society is dedicated to honoring outstanding contributions and lifting up the next generation of biomechanics researchers.

Our biggest achievements over the past year included working with the ASB student representative and student chapters to assist our committee in the more equitable distribution of student travel awards and invitations to the 3MT competition. In addition, we partnered with the ASB Diversity Committee to improve our awards policies and rubrics to be more inclusive. Some changes will be in place this year, with the remainder coming into place next awards season.

Please consider applying to one of the many individual awards or competitive grants below in the upcoming months:

March 4, 2025:

  • Borelli Award
  • Goel Award for Translational Research in Biomechanics
  • Founders’ Award
  • Junior Faculty Research Grant
  • Research Travel Grants
  • Up & Comer Award
  • Pre-Doctoral Award
  • Early Career Award

Journal Awards, Student Travel Awards and the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition will be managed via the abstract submission process (February 25, 2025). If you are a student who wants to be considered for a student travel award or to participate in the 3MT competition, don’t forget to check the corresponding boxes on the abstract submission website!

My goal is to ensure we have a diverse group of ASB Awards Committee members leading the review of our award and grant applications. If you are interested in contributing in a more substantive role with the awards committee, please email me. We are particularly looking to add 3 full ASB members to this committee by early March, particularly at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor levels. We are also always looking for those outside academia to join the committee as well.

We are seeking reviewers for our upcoming awards and grants. We welcome individuals from all ranks (graduate students, postdocs, faculty) and sectors (academia, industry). Reviews take less than an hour and occur in late March or April. An active ASB membership is required, so please ensure your membership is current. Last year, over 60 members participated—thank you! If interested, please email asbawards@asbweb.org to volunteer.
