Hello ASB Members, this is my first newsletter as ASB’s Education Chair and I am excited to highlight some of our upcoming initiatives. I am lucky to have a great group of members working on the Education committee and we have begun to work on updating the Biomechanics Teaching Repository, planned education-related programming for the 2023 Annual Meeting, supported Regional Meetings, awarded grad student Grants-In-Aid, and begun initiatives to support biomechanics at the undergraduate level.

ASB Teaching Repository

Many thanks to Patrick Rider for setting up the original format of the ASB Teaching Repository! The original repository held 70 entries where fellow ASB members shared their tips, lessons, assessments, labs, and more for those looking for help teaching biomechanics-related classes and programming at every level. This was a particularly rich resource for ideas for National Biomechanics Day events. Unfortunately, the platform recently changed their fee structure so we are unable to continue using it as it was originally designed.

The success of the original format will be used as a guide moving forward to our new version. The new version will be searchable and will break down entries to make it easy to find what you are looking for. We encourage you to make use of this resource, as it is truly a wealth of information. It is expected that the new Teaching Repository will become available within the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

ASB Regional Meetings

This year, funding was awarded to five regional meetings, congratulations to the Great Plains, Midwest, Northwest, Rocky Mountain, South Central groups on receiving this funding! In addition to two other regional meetings, ASB is endorsing a record number of seven regional meetings in 2023. Please see the listing below for more information. It is getting more competitive to obtain ASB funding for these regional meetings, so if you have an interest in hosting, please start planning early for the application deadline on September 30th each year. Existing meetings should continue to seek external sources to fund their meetings as continued funding is not guaranteed. Feel free to contact me for more information or refer to our website.

Other Initiatives

We are working on some education-related programming for the upcoming ASB Annual Meeting in Knoxville, including some workshops to highlight the new Teaching Repository and support members doing Education-related research. We are aiming to revive the ASB Teaching Symposium, where we will choose from education-related abstract submissions, so please consider submitting an abstract to that effect.

I am excited to merge my passion for undergraduate education with the ASB, and have begun initiatives to highlight undergraduates in the society and their work. We plan to share resources regarding a biomechanics certificate and undergraduate degree programs to further broaden the reach of biomechanics beyond the graduate level.

If you are interested in participating in any of these initiatives, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to catching up with all of you at this year’s annual meeting in Knoxville and I wish you the best in your education endeavors in the spring 2023 semester!
