Where will you be July 11th– 15th of this year? Hopefully the answer is Vancouver, Canada for the 10th World Congress of Biomechanics (WCB)! As last happened in 2014, the American Society of Biomechanics is serving as a partner society for this year’s World Congress, along with the Canadian Society of Biomechanics (CSB) and the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB). We are very excited to come together for a global celebration of biomechanics, while ensuring some of the hallmarks of the ASB annual meeting too!
You’ll see some familiar faces amongst our Plenary Speakers, Track Chairs, and Invited Session Speakers. Thank you to everyone who has said “yes”! ASB will be nicely represented across these areas thanks to your participation (and we would have had even more ASB-ers engaged in these roles, but some invited had to decline). Abstracts are currently under review and we anticipate many ASB presenters amongst podium and poster sessions. Accommodations in Vancouver are expected to fill quickly, so it is suggested that as soon as you receive your abstract acceptance, you move forward with accommodation booking (and registration). When you do register, please make sure to select ASB as your affiliation, as this impacts the meeting proceeds that will come back to our society.
We are also very excited for our special sessions, some of which are led by ASB colleagues. These are more similar to our ASB workshops and tutorials, but hosted in an abbreviated timeframe. The topics all sound quite broadly interesting and the proposed facilitation, engaging – be sure to add them to your schedule! Development of a strong slate of student programming is also underway with ASB, CSB, and ESB student leaders working together to plan networking and professional development opportunities that you will see in the schedule.
A special thanks to Andy Karduna for his willingness to run the 3 Minute Thesis competition – we’re excited to see this ASB meeting hallmark continue and welcome students from the other attending countries. We are still fine tuning other ASB meeting hallmarks such as a Women in Science event.
We will also be having a 3-hour ASB-hosted block within the program so that you will be able to enjoy our traditional programming such as the keynote from our Borelli Award winner.
I’ve been thankful to work with a wonderful programming committee comprised of biomechanists from around the world. We are collectively committed to ensuring a wonderful experience for attendees that includes excellent science, opportunities for professional development and networking, and time to explore beautiful Vancouver – including morning runs around the city with other conference attendees. We hope you’ll join us this July to see old friends, meet new friends, and enjoy not only our traditional conference activities but benefit from some of the CSB, ESB, and other society hallmarks too. Please feel free to reach out if you have programming ideas, needs, or questions (asbprogramchair@asbweb.org).
