As we quickly approach many deadlines for American Society of Biomechanics individual awards and competitive grants, I want to emphasize the importance of nominating yourself or others for these accolades. Our society is incredibly giving, with ~$40,000 budgeted for our awards program in fiscal year 2024!

Recognition with individual awards and competitive grants validates achievements, inspires our scientific community, and celebrates the value of biomechanics research to society. Awards and grants are an effective way to share exciting new breakthroughs with a diverse audience and highlight the impact of research, innovation, engagement, teaching, and mentorship. Many of these awards are given priority placements at the Annual Meeting, enhancing the visibility of these outstanding individuals (and the teams around them!).

Please consider applying to one of the many individual awards or competitive grants below in the upcoming months:

March 1, 2024:

  • Borelli Award
  • Goel Award for Translational Research in Biomechanics
  • Founders’ Award
  • Junior Faculty Research Award
  • Research Travel Grants
  • Up & Comer Award

March 25, 2024:

  • ASB Pre-Doctoral Award
  • ASB Early Career Award

Journal Awards, Student Travel Awards and the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition will be managed via the abstract submission process (March 13, 2024). If you are a student who wants to be considered for a student travel award or to participate in the 3MT competition, don’t forget to check the corresponding boxes on the abstract submission website!

I’d like to recognize the wonderful ASB Awards Committee. Thank you to Dennis Anderson, Kimberly Bigelow, Clare Milner, Hugo Giambini, and Kota Takahashi.  Also, a big thank you to Missy Morrow, who has rolled off the committee after 4+ years! I’m currently looking to add up to two members to the ASB Awards Committee. Please email asbawards@asbweb.org if you are interested in serving on this committee. Ideally, I’m looking for one individual at the Assistant professor level and another at the Associate/Full professor level.

In the upcoming year, we will also be working with the ASB student representative and student chapters to assist our committee in the more equitable distribution of student travel awards and invitations to the 3MT competition.

Finally, if you are willing to review our upcoming awards or grants, we are looking for individuals of all ranks (graduate students, postdocs, faculty) or occupations (academia, industry) to review our applications. Reviews typically happen in late March or April and often take less than an hour of your time. You do need an active ASB membership to review, so don’t forget to renew. Last year, we had over 60+ members participate in the review process – thank you! Please email asbawards@asbweb.org if you are interested in serving as a reviewer this spring.

And a few pictures to highlight some of last year’s award winner:
