Serving as the ASB Education Chair has been one of the most exciting roles I have had the privilege of taking on. I have learned so much about ASB, my fellow biomechanists, and the different aspects of biomechanics education as I have served the ASB community. Along the way I have been fortunate to meet many amazing people and make lots of friends. As I begin my final year as the ASB Education Chair I wanted to put in a plug for any who may be interested in being the next ASB Education Chair. We will be soliciting applications in March of 2025. Please feel free to reach out if you would like more information.
I am especially fortunate to have an excellent team of highly motivated individuals on the Education Committee which have allowed us to continue to serve the needs of our ASB Membership.
Regional Meetings
This year we are supporting some excellent regional meetings. If you have never attended a regional meeting please consider attending, as these are excellent opportunities for student engagement, networking among our members, and broadening our reach as a society. These have been and will continue to be priorities for the ASB as we work on our new strategic plan. I have made some of my most valued connections at these Regional Meetings and am grateful for all that continue to support these meetings by attending, sponsoring, and hosting. Thank you to our Regional Meeting Reviewers: Lindsay Carrol, Tara Diesbourg, Craig Goehler, Jonathan Goodwin, Gu Eon Kang, Luke Pelton, JJ Wallace, and Matt Wittstein.

Graduate Student Research Grants
In the past few years, we have noticed a reduction in students applying for the graduate student grants. In an effort to better serve our ASB student community the Education Committee decided to make some changes. The student grant sub-committee met several times over the last 6 months to finalize these improvements (Thank you to our sub-committee members: Kristyne Wiegand, Ben Meyer, James Yang, Feng Yang, Scott Monfort, Sara Arena, Wendi Weimar, Ke Song, Bobby Charalambous, Jonathan Goodwin, Jake Hinkel-Lipsker, and Chun-Kai Huang). These changes include:
- A new name: ASB Graduate Student Research Grant (formerly known as ASB Grant-In-Aid) to more accurately describe what it is to new members;
- A new deadline: 2/15 (formerly 1/15) to help reduce the need to work on the application over the holiday break;
- A new format: More concise format that replicates federal agencies to reduce the demand on the applicant and keep it more in line with other grant submissions;
- Waived ASB Annual Meeting registration: to encourage recipients to present their work to our community.
You can find more information on the new student grants on our website. Please make sure both the student applicant and mentor are current in their ASB membership and prepare your applications for 2/15!
Make ASB 2025 in Pittsburgh an Education-A-Palooza!
In the past few years there has been consistent interest in programming at the ASB meetings focused on education and outreach. Broadening our reach as a society to individuals in teaching-focused positions and to students at all stages continues to be a strategic priority for ASB. The Education Committee has been working hard to submit education-related content for workshops and symposia, but the majority of ASB content comes from YOU! Be sure to submit your education and outreach abstracts to ASB during the regular abstract submission period. If you have any questions about what may be permissible or have an idea but don’t know where to start, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Many thanks to this year’s ASB Meeting Content sub-committee, Kristyne Weigand, Matt Wittstein, JJ Wallace, Sara Arena, Sabrina Lee, Nikita Kuznetsov, and Megan Reissman.
Our ASB Repository is a convenient place to find many different types of resources. Below is a list of some of the many things you can find on our Repository:
- publication requirements for various biomechanics journals,
- a projectile motion simulator,
- conference etiquette tips,
- steps to flip your classroom,
- and much more!!!
What could you contribute to the greater biomechanics community? Submit your own resources or guides here. Many thanks to those on the Education Committee who have worked hard to develop, recruit, and maintain these resources (JJ Wallace, Kristyne Weigand, Sara Arena, Brian Knarr, Herman van Werkhoven, Dustin Bruening, and Brad Bowser).
In addition to the main Repository, we also have a Meeting Repository of content from ASB 2024 in Madison. We compiled 39 submissions from the meeting which can be found here for the time being. This Meeting Repository is not permanent, so we recommend any resources that may be relevant beyond this year be uploaded to the main Repository.
Finally, I’d like to thank our ASB member community for their contributions, submissions, and attendance to the Regional Meetings, Grad Student Grants, Repository, and Annual Meeting Education Programming. None of these initiatives would be possible without your help!
