It has been a busy year at the ASB Executive Board – we have created official policies for ASB Affiliate Groups and Non-Profit Partners, started negotiating on the 2026 Annual Meeting (more details to come), and created a Development Committee. Thanks in particular to Rakié Cham (Chair), Maria Pasquale, Chris Wilburn, James Ashton-Miller, and Nick Stergiou for being part of this committee with me.

I also want to take the time to thank Rakié, the members of the Nominating Committee, and other members of the Executive Board for getting a great slate of candidates for our recent election. I look forward to working with those who were elected over the next two years, and I want to encourage the wonderful, deserving candidates who were not elected to please get more involved on an ASB committee and consider running again in the future. I wasn’t elected the first time I ran either!

As I take the gavel for my year as President, one of the most important tasks on my to-do list is to lead the Society in revisiting and updating our Strategic Plan. You may be thinking, “Didn’t we just create a Strategic Plan?” Many thanks go to Brian Umberger and the rest of the Executive Board in 2018-2019 for doing that work, and that plan was for 2020-2025. So it’s that time again!

I used to think that strategic plans were a waste of time, because it always seemed like there was a lot of talk but it didn’t actually lead to any changes. But more recently, I have been involved with strategic planning at my home institution and I see the point – it’s about prioritizing what we do with limited resources and about having a touchstone for all of the activities we undertake and decisions we make. To that end, we want to have as much input as we can get from the entire membership. There will be multiple opportunities to participate and weigh in:

  • Please take a few minutes to respond to this survey by the end of August 2024. (https://go.osu.edu/asb_sp_sum2024)
  • Look at the registration table at ASB 2024 in Madison for times when you can join a small-group discussion with me to share your strategic priorities for ASB in the next five years.
  • Read the monthly e-blasts and other communications for other opportunities throughout the year to share your thoughts and provide feedback on our draft plan as it comes together.

I look forward to working with all of you and serving as your President over the next year!
