The purpose of the Student Committee is to ensure that ASB is serving its student members in meaningful ways.

The ASB Student Committee is led by the current Student Representative and composed of students from all disciplines of ASB. This committee works to serve the interests of all student members of ASB, with focus in the following areas:

  1. Aid in the professional development as students move through the early stages of their biomechanics career
  2. Provide mentorship opportunities as well as resources to help students can get the most out of these opportunities
  3. Utilize our combined passion for biomechanics to disseminate our work and share this passion with our communities
  4. Bring previously unrelated students together to make new biomechanics friends

Specifically, this committee is responsible for planning and executing student events at the annual meeting, as well as promoting other initiatives related to student interests in ASB.

  • Student Author AMA Series
  • Annual meeting professional development roundtables
  • Annual meeting mentorship program

The ASB Student Representative is responsible for facilitating student involvement in ASB and serves on the executive board to amplify the interests of the students of ASB. Each Student Representative elected by the society to a 2-year term. If you are interested in serving as the next ASB Student Representative please review the responsibilities below and feel free to reach out to the current Student Rep with any questions.

Student Representative Responsibilities

 

 Status:

  • Serve as a voting participant at all meetings of the Executive Board
  • Serve as the Chair of the Student Advisory Committee
  • Obtain approval for modifications to any existing activities as well as implementation of new activities from the Executive Board
  • Obtain approval for modifications to the Student Representative responsibilities from the Executive Board

 

Objectives:

  • Facilitate student involvement in the Society
  • Communicate with the Executive Board about all pertinent student-related information
  • Encourage student interaction as well as establish contacts among students for jobs and educational opportunities
  • Interact with other students and receive feedback about activities at the annual meeting
  • Encourage student involvement at the annual meeting by promoting interaction and discussion among the students and, as applicable, students with mentors
  • Encourage student participation for awards
  • Assist students in applying for membership
  • Collaborate with the Executive Board and other committees to further the interests of the Society

 

Duties:

  • Communicate with the previous Student Representative and Executive Board to discuss operating procedures, transfer of materials, and objectives to attain
  • Serve as a channel of communication with the Executive Board for the students
  • Attend all Executive Board meetings to report on (1) student activities planned at the meeting prior to the annual meeting, (2) student activities held at the meeting after annual meeting, (3) tasks completed since the previous meeting and (4) upcoming plans
  • Solicit participation from students for the Student Advisory Committee, such that it is representative of different disciplines, genders, backgrounds, and education statuses
  • Facilitate this Committee in promoting and leading student initiatives in ASB
  • Collaborate with the Program and Meeting Chairs to schedule student activities during the Annual Meetings in the middle and end of the term of office
  •  Organize the student mentoring program for the annual meeting
  • Collaborate with the Education and Diversity Committees, as applicable, to represent viewpoints of student members
  • Provide the Newsletter Editor with information to print in all newsletters
  • Provide the Communications Chair with information to post on the ASB website
  • Use the ASB Facebook page to communicate with members about student initiatives in ASB and other topics of interest in biomechanics
  • Serve as the liaison between ASB chapters and the Executive Board, including handling chapter applications and updates
  • Revise and update the Student Representative responsibilities
  • Obtain student nominations for the Student Representative position for the next term two months prior to the election
  • Communicate with new Student Representative to ensure smooth transition of duties

 

Meeting Attendance Requirements throughout term of office:

 

  • ASB Business Meetings (August) – during Annual Meetings at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of the term of office
  • Meeting Executive Board Meetings (August)
  • In addition to meeting while at the annual meeting, the student rep meets with the executive board multiple times throughout the year.
  1. The full board meets virtually in the Spring (May) and the Fall (October).
  2. A full board Winter (February) meeting in person, held in the location of the upcoming Annual Meeting.
  3. Short (monthly) meetings between the student rep and the President may occur to keep projects moving forward and everyone informed of progress.
  4. Meetings with other subsets of the executive board may occur to facilitate specific tasks/projects of ASB.

 

Qualifications for nomination as Student Representative (two year term):

  • Current ASB student member
  • Attendance at a minimum of one previous ASB Annual Meeting with or without an accepted abstract
  • Retain student status for entire duration of term
  • Ability to participate in required meetings throughout term

 

Election Process:

  • Open call for self-nominations for Student Representative is communicated by emailing current membership two months prior to the online annual election (early March of current Student Rep’s second year of term of office)
  • To self-nominate, interested students should email a brief background statement, within the word limit, to the current Student Representative before the deadline.
  • Statements will be published on the ASB website and should describe what the candidate wants to improve/implement as Student Representative and qualifications/experience that will help them to do so. Statements should be in the following format:

NOTE: Should the number of candidates for Student Representative exceed two, the Student Representative will confer with the Executive Board to identify and nominate two candidates for the ballot.
