Hello everyone! It was nice to meet so many of you this past year at the annual ASB meeting in Knoxville, as well as through the various virtual events we hold throughout the year. I’d like to remind everyone that an ASB student membership does not just give you conference perks; we also host online events throughout the year. Membership nurtures a sense of belonging within a vibrant community of fellow student biomechanists, enriching your training and future career. We host monthly online events including our ‘Ask-Me-Anything’ student author series, professional development seminars, student socials, and other career resources. Check out this link to learn more about all the ways ASB supports us as students.

See below for student updates:

  1. ASB 2023-Knoxville

It was another record-breaking year for our Mentor-Mentee Match program, with 134 mentor and 208 mentee participants! Students also enjoyed our Professional Development Round Table event, which included new topics dedicated to post-doctoral fellows and undergraduate/masters students. The Student Night Out bowling event was a great hit and helped to start the conference off right! Thanks to OptiTrack for helping to sponsor this event. Planning for ASB 2024 in Madison, WI is already underway, so if you are interested in joining the Student Committee and helping to plan student events, please reach out.

  1. Student Chapters

We welcomed the George Mason University ASB Student Chapter this year. We now have a total of 13 student chapters spanning the country. We’re currently working on building more collaborative events between chapters. We have started a ‘Student Chapter of the Semester’ to highlight the great work our chapters are doing. If you’d like your chapter to be highlighted, please fill out this form. If you are interested in starting an ASB student chapter at your institution, more information can be found on our ASB website.

  1. Student Author Ask Me Anything (AMA) Series

The student committee continues to host our bimonthly AMA (Ask-Me-Anything) series. These sessions feature students who have recently published a paper talking to other students about their research and sharing their experience with the publishing process. Check out recordings of our previous AMA events, and stay tuned for our upcoming event in March! If you have recently published and are interested in sharing your experience, please complete this survey.

  1. Professional Development Series

We host bimonthly workshops/seminars as part of our Professional Development Series. Our events this year included a student-led panel in preparation for the annual conference and a workshop focused on crafting a resume for careers in industry. We are excited to host our sixth workshop in this series, titled ‘Distraction-Free Working,’ hosted by Dr. Kurt Beschorner. Register for this workshop and check out previous recordings here.

I look forward to continuing to work with you all as we build our biomechanics student community together!
